1) Dr. Thomas Marsh

Picture Dr. Marsh

Dr. Thomas K. Marsh
Optometrist

Dr. Marsh has practiced optometry in Oconomowoc since May of 1976. He was born and raised in Rockford, Illinois. After graduating from Illinois Wesleyan University with a biology major, he and his wife, Laina, moved to the state of Oregon where he graduated in 1975 from the Pacific School of Optometry in Forest Grove.

During his years in Oconomowoc, Dr. Marsh has served as president, vice president, and secretary/treasurer of the local Kettle Morraine Optometric Society, and maintained membership in the state and national societies, Wisconsin Optometric Assoc. and American Optometric Assoc. He has also been very active in church activities, volunteering time for committees, and teaching adult education classes.

Dr. Marsh’s favorite hobbies include flying radio-controlled airplanes, boating the beautiful Wisconsin lakes, and amateur radio. He also maintains membership in clubs associated with these hobbies.

Dr. Marsh prides himself in getting to know his patients, how they use their eyes in their daily activities, including work, home and recreation, so he can help meet all their visual needs.

Dr. Marsh wrote me a nice e-mail:

I did fly full sized airplanes twenty some years ago, but just fly radio controlled model airplanes now.  Lately, I have been flying radio controlled sea planes.  I enjoy being around the lakes in Wisconsin, the state I live in, so I put floats on my airplanes and have the whole lake as my runway.  Thank you for letting me know about your web-site www.DoctorsHobbies.com I will enjoy checking in periodically to see what other doctors like to do for fun.

Thanks for thinking about me.

2) Dr. Jörg Hänsel, flight controller (but virtually!)

joerg.jpg (4827 Byte)

The dentist from Dresden/Germany is one of the enthusiastic users of flight simulation programs in the virtual world.
They have a network of pilots and controllers and are performing flights with heavy machines live in the internet.

He was born on 24 August 1953 in Dresden, after his "Abitur"  (maturity) 1972 he became a dentist from 1975 to 1980.
After a time as an assistant at the Dresden academy for prothetic stomatology he was also teaching students and worked scientifically.
In 1986 he made his dissertation as Dr. med. and opened his own office in 1992.

After the unification of Germany east and west he began to work with computers (which was impossible before!) and even created his homepage by himself (being modest and telling he is "no specialist"). He is keeping it interesting presenting more than only his office......
....though he has not yet updated it with reports about his flight controller activities, bit this is planned.

In the German magazine FOCUS there is a report about this group (in German): http://focus.msn.de/F/2003/32/Internet/flugsimulator/flugsimulator.htm?streamsnr=8

Soon I should get more information about this activity......

Visit his homepage at www.Haensel.de !

3) BalloonDoc and multi-hobby pharmacist Rolf E. Schindler:

Herr Schindler und Frau Leopoldsberger

is he a FlyingDoc, too? In German a balloon is not flying (fliegen) but "riding" (fahren) through the air......

4) Dr. Wito-Schulze is flying Delta-kite (?)!

In this moment I just give you the link to an interview with him in German: http://www.pharma-aventis.de/Patienten/Information/index.php?ID=108

Hope I can get more permissions and material.

5) Bertrand Piccard BalloonDoc  BenefizDoc FlyingDoc

His new project:
To surround the Earth with a solar airplane!

AN AIRPLANE AND A SYMBOL
In our various meetings, exchanges and contacts, many of you have asked to be kept informed about the progress of the Solar Impulse project. We are pleased to be able to do this from now on, by means of this logbook, which we are opening today, as the first step in directly addressing the values that bring us together.

Solar Impulse is both a solar airplane, with the ambition of flying night and day without fuel, and a symbol of what our society must become capable of achieving in terms of energy efficiency and the use of renewable energies. In the following lines, and subsequent issues which will be published several times per year, you will read about these two aspects. You will be able to follow the project's progress, the work of the engineers, the technological challenges we encounter, to get to know the people who are making this adventure possible, and to share in our thoughts about our society's energy and environmental future.

If the pioneering spirit has enabled spectacular conquests in the past, it needs, in the 21st century to enable us to develop the quality of life to which present and future generations are entitled. Technology and humanism must stand shoulder to shoulder to lighten mankind's environmental footprint, to stimulate industry and the economy in the search for new solutions, and seriously question the certainties and habits that keep us prisoners of our expensive and dangerous dependence on fossil fuels.

With our round-the-world flight in a solar airplane, we want to share this state of mind and carry along in our wake all those who, like us, believe in the power of symbols and visions.
Welcome aboard!

Bertrand Piccard
President of Solar Impulse
