Jörg Polak is psychiatrist from Tauberbischofsheim/Germany and besides his work as doctor in the county hospital he is working as Amway representative.
He likes it to have an option to improve security for the future
with another basis and not depend on medicine alone seeing many changes in the
german health politics.....

Hello Wolfgang,
I'm flattered that you would want to do a presentation about me
and my musical career. I don't have any current recordings, but the group that I
play with the most recently did a live recording which we are going to release
in the Spring once we get it mixed down and edited.
I could tell you a little more about myself. I don't do a solo thing at all. I
greatly admire people such as yourself who can sit down all by yourself and play
wonderful music solo. I prefer to play with other people.....Either backing up a
singer or playing with another instrumentalist or playing in a larger group. I
like all styles of music.
In various settings I play country, rock, zydeco/cajun, swing, bluegrass, reggae,
jazz, etc. I've done some classical, but again, only really in a group setting.
So I don't know if that would make a very good presentation for your project.
Why don't we wait until our recording is done and go from there?

A little more about my transition to playing music for a living. I was a Doctor
of Optometry for 21 years. My father had done that. I was in practice with him
for 10 years, then on my own for another 11 years. I always played music on the
side when I was practicing Optometry.
I had taken piano lessons for a while as a child and played different
instruments in the school band. I joined my first little rock'n'roll band at age
14.
I quit practicing Optometry in 1998. It was a good career. I enjoyed helping
people with their various eye and vision problems. And I had a family to support.
At that point I was single. My kids were on their own. I didn't have any debts.
And my living expenses were very low. I live in a little 12-sided house, which
is paid for, in the woods. I didn't have any kind of retirement fund or pension,
but I decided to do what I really wanted to do. I said to myself, "If not now,
when?" I didn't want to look back years later and regret that I had not followed
my heart and done what I really wanted to do.
So, it's been good. I'm able to support myself between playing music and helping
my friend, Kate, with her business. That job is very low-key and relaxed. I get
to travel, meet a lot of wonderful people, and play with some great musicians.
No regrets......

Rainer Katterbach is working as HonoraryDoc in the
Samaritan telephone service since he is retired from his chief doctor of a
Berlin hospital.
Two or three times per month he covers a service in the pastoral advice service
for a 4 hrs shift. Most calls are 20 to 45 minutes. Even Katterbach as
experiences psychoanalyst says that the calls can consume a lot of energy. His "clients"
are chronically ill persons or young mothers who have never worked and have
trouble getting life organised. The basic principle is anonymity.
A friend made him curious to do this honorary job. Well, for 30 % of the calls his former job as psychiatrist and psycho-therapist helps a lot since they have some psychiatric disease. Though he does not like to reveal his professions during the calls. Others have practical problems and it is sort of difficult not to give advice at once but primarily to LISTEN. Then it is easier to guide the call partner to himself and find his/her personal solution.
A certain religious background is expected from the honorary helpers, Katterbach has now arrived at the hinduistic religion, but he claims that religious discussions are not the right tool in this samaritan telephone service - instead listening and finding solutions in the last comes out of it.
Katterbach himself had interest in psychology and psychiatry since he was a child. Born near Aachen/Germany he got the advice from a friend of his father to study medicine. The athmosphere of "Aufbruch" in Berlin made him live there. He had hard times studying, working and having a yougn family with three kids. The support of his wife was essential for him. HIs interest for samaritan telephone service has begun early for him after he read a book of the medical doctor, priest and psychotherapist Klaus Thomas (see next presentation!) and later he got inspiration by Viktor E. Frankl's work "Ärztliche Seelsorge".

October 6th, 1956, the medical doctor, priest and psychologist and psychotherapist Klaus Thomas founded the "Ärztliche Lebensmüdenbetreuung" in Berlin which at that time had the highest rate for suicides in Germany. Soon this service was known as "Telefonseelsorge" (samaritan telephone service).
Klaus Thomas was one of the main promoters of the "Autogenes Training" of Johannes Heinrich Schultz and was the most important student of him. He was teacher for German, englisch and history, then studied from 1934 to 1947 theology, psychology and medicine. Later he made his doctorate degree at Ernst Kretschmer in Marburg/Germany. He published 13 books and 300 publications. Study travels made him visit more than 100 countries. After founding the samaritan telephone service he also was founder and head of the I.H.-Schultz-Institute in Berlin from 1971 as well as teacher at the Berlin Schadow-High-School.

My dream: health promotion in schools and other settings as a part of the regular school-program. Physicians are working there as experts of health. The facts in Germany. There isn’t any regular health offer in schools but a lot of projects like a big patchwork. I founded my own society “Medusana Foundation in 1994 because we needed a base for own projects. Our basic organisation is guaranted by own fund, so we are independent. Planning projects we look for sponsoring.
Actually we have different projects in school and a first one called “Apfelstrasse” in the setting kindergarten. Our biggest and most developed project in school: “MediPäds-Teachers and Doctors for Prevention” is supported by Janssen-Cilag ltd., Neuss, Germany as well as “Apfelstrasse”.
We believe that
health promotion must fulfil the following criterions of quality:
-salutogenetic
-interdisciplinarry
-gender-specific

Gesundheitsunterricht
Außer der Zahnmedizin gehört mein Herz der Musik! Ich spiele
seit 34 Jahren Gitarre, komponiere seit ich 10 bin, und habe eine Band, die
herrlich altmodische Musik im Stil von Genesis, Yes, King Crimson und Pink Floyd
spielt..und das überaus erfolglos! ;-)

Geld geb ich aus für Musik, Gitarren(bei letzten Schätzungen waren es 22!),
Mode, und meinen 17 Jahre alten Sportwagen aus Stuttgart...
Ich würde mich freuen auf diese Weise einfach und ungezwungen ein paar nette
Leute kennenzulernen, mit denen man sich über Interessen austauschen, feiern,
oder in einer fremden Stadt mal auf einen Kaffee oder Wein verabreden kann.
Wenn noch eine gute Geschäftsidee dabei herausspringt - um so besser ;-)

activities!
Of course there are informations and pictures about my musical activities on the
homepage of www.Muddys-Club.de ,
Just yesterday (in 2006) there was my penultima blues session in
the club - having 40 young people from Ramat Gan/Israel and other guests- and it
was phantastic again!
How many MusicDocs there are in one town could be noticed 2 years ago when we
made a beneficial concert in the Muddys club for "Ärzte ohne Grenzen" (Doctors
without borders): Jazz, Blues,
Irish Folk, Klassik, Folklore und Rock'n Roll was played by Docs for Docs - we
had to close at 9 p.m. because the place was overcrowded!
Occasionally I play the violin (because my wife dislikes it...) and I get into
tenor sax for the last 2 or 3 years. It is a pity that I have little time to
practise.
Half a year ago we had a nice photo exposition about Chicago. Our colleague
Höltermann (chief cardiologist of our hospital) and I could raise at least 850 €uro
for a beneficial purpose.
This is how we are enjoying arts - our patients like it - and we have our relaxation....
