Karl Hoffmann (December 7, 1823 - May 11, 1859) was a German physician and naturalist.
Hoffmann was born in Stettin and studied at Berlin university. In 1853 he travelled to Costa Rica with Alexander von Frantzius to collect natural history specimens. He served as a doctor in the Costa Rican army during the invasion of William Walker in 1856. He died of typhoid in Puntarenas.
Hoffmann is commemorated in the names of a number of animals, including Melanerpes hoffmannii and:

The US dentist Martin Nweeia has a rather extraordinary hobby: He studies the spiral tusk of this "Unicorn of the seas".
He managed to perform several expeditions to Canada and the Arctic together
with other teams of scientists to reveal secrets about
this animal. Nweeia says: It is the only known straight tusk and the only one in
spiral shape. It has been extremely flexible and hard in tests.
Mal eNarwhals have tusks up to 2,5 meters, females do not have one. Nweeia4s
hypothesis: "I believe the tusk is a kind of sensor. It has to do
with detecting food." To verificate this he equips some Narwhals with sensors in
their tusk......
He is veterinarian and involved in a famous private zoo in
Hamburg/Germany:

The zoo is handled by the 6th generation of the Hagenbeck
family and they like to step back and let the animals
be present in the public.<
